Choosing the wrong resin base for powder coatings leads to severe quality deterioration, discoloration, and premature failure of industrial components. The two main families of powder coatings are epoxy and polyester, each with entirely different applications. Epoxy coatings, due to their chemical structure, offer the highest level of adhesion, strong chemical resistance against solvents, acids, and alkalis, as well as excellent mechanical performance. However, epoxy has an inherent weakness against the sun’s ultraviolet (UV) radiation and tends to undergo chalking when exposed to outdoor environments. Therefore, epoxy is suitable only for indoor components, mechanical room equipment, and buried or submerged industrial parts. In contrast, polyester coatings provide outstanding resistance to UV radiation and outdoor weather conditions. These coatings are the primary choice for architectural aluminum facades, urban furniture, and automotive wheels/rims. For environments that require both chemical resistance and moderate physical durability, hybrid coatings (a combination of epoxy and polyester) are formulated. A precise understanding of the service environment is the first step in placing the right powder coating order.
